Yoga Props for your Practice
Depending on where you are with your practice, you may want none, some or all of the props and aids listed below. I know that I practiced for a year - paying $1 per rental mat - before I was ready to buy my own mat. It made all the difference in the world. But...we all have to get to that place mentally, ourselves, in our own good time.
So, read below on what you need for your practice. Whatever you decide to do, it's the perfect choice for that moment in time.
- Yoga Mat: thick or thin rubber roll mat that provides traction and comfort while performing your asana practice
- Yoga Blanket: used as additional padding in certain postures; also useful in restorative postures
- Mat Towel: covers yoga mat and provides a non-slip surface when the yoga class (and your body) is heated
- Hand Towel: used as a prop to help get into deeper upper-body asanas as well as to wipe-away moisture from hands and face during yoga practice
- Yoga Bag: carries your yoga mat and expresses your personal style
- Blocks: an effective prop to support the body for proper alignment in poses as well as used in restorative postures to open up tight muscle areas
- Yoga Strap: an effective prop to help get into upper-body and leg-stretching poses
- Wedges: made of dense substance (foam, bamboo, cork); used as a tool to get into inversions
- Meditation Cushion: keeps your bumb comfortable while sitting in meditation
